How to declutter your home.

Decluttering your home is the perfect way to shift the energy of your space and create room for new opportunities to enter your life.

But what is clutter?

Well, clutter is:

  • anything you no longer use or want.

  • anything untidy or unorganised.

  • unfinished projects.

  • broken objects.

  • too many items in a small space.

  • anything that represents the old you—the person you no longer are and/or do not wish to be.

  • anything that represents your mental and emotional baggage (e.g. photos of an ex).

  • anything that no longer brings you joy.

Decluttering is not about minimalism. It is about being mindful of your surroundings and creating an environment that empowers you to move forward rather than keeping you in the past. It is the very first step to Feng Shui your home!

The decluttering process.

It’s important to only choose one room at a time to declutter so that you do not get overwhelmed or alter the energy of your space too rapidly. Pick one room per day, week, or month—whatever suits your schedule.

Then, before you begin, it’s a good idea to centre yourself with a short meditation or mindfulness exercise. If you’re someone who struggles to let go of things, this step is especially important as it will help you to surrender to the process. If you do not already have a meditation practice you’re familiar with, you can simply take a few minutes to breathe deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth, to the count of 4.

The 5-box method.

The 5-box method is an easy way to organise your belongings as you declutter your home. You will need five decent-sized boxes labelled:

  • Keep.

  • Gift.

  • Sell.

  • Donate.

  • Trash.

The keep box is for anything you would like to keep but does not belong where it is and should be moved to a different part of the house.

The gift box is for items you no longer want, but a friend or family member may appreciate.

The sell box is for valuable items that you would be able to sell on Marketplace or somewhere similar.

The donate box is for items that are in good condition, but you have no one to gift them to and would be unlikely to sell. This is for your local op shop or charity.

The trash box is for everything left over that could not be gifted, sold, or donated. Be mindful when disposing of clutter and recycle appropriately.

Finishing up.

At the end of a decluttering session, it’s always nice to wrap up by tidying the room and using a room spray, diffuser, or lighting a candle to invite positive energy into your fresh space!
